Thailand host AFACI Project Evaluation Workshopon Establishment of Asian Food Composition Database (AFCD

The Department of Agriculture, as Thailand’s National Representative in Asian Food and Agriculture Initiative (AFACI), in collaboration with the Institute of Nutrition, Mahidol University as Principal Investigator (PI) of Establishment of Asian Food Composition Database (AFCD) Project under AFACI, hosted the Project Evaluation Workshop on AFCD during 28 – 30 May 2024 at Mercure Bangkok Makkasan Hotel, Bangkok, and there was a study visit at Institute of Nutrition, Mahidol University, Salaya, Nakhon Pathom province. The workshop funded by AFACI aimed at sharing the final results and outcomes of the AFCD project as implemented by each member country over the previous three years. This activity seeks not only to share the project results
but also to facilitate discussions and prepare the essential steps required to effectively disseminate the project performances. The objective of the AFCD project is to preserve the food culture and biodiversity by securing nutritional information on major agricultural products and to establish a food composition database. There were participants from 13 AFACI member countries participated in the workshop which are Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, Indonesia, Kyrgyzstan, Laos, Mongolia, Nepal, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, South Korea, and Thailand.

Besides, there were two invited speakers from Department of Health, Ministry of Public Health, Thailand, and Food and Nutrition Division (ESN), Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (FAO) to share knowledge and experiences on “food and nutrition policy in Thailand: use of food composition database” and “challenges on developing and using food composition databases” respectively.

The outcomes of the workshop were the progress report of the project regarding food composition database in 13 AFACI member countries and creating high quality database and how to utilize the database to support agriculture sector as well as food and nutrition sector in each country were discussed. The extension of the project also was being discussed in order to expand to regional level.
